Winter Tire Care Tips
A snowplow can be a welcomed sight after a big snow, but the heavy-duty road salt they leave behind can take a toll on your car. Here are a few things you can do to protect your car from the damaging effects of road salt this winter.
Planning Ahead
Step 1: Before the first snowfall, give your car a bumper-to-bumper scrubbing. If it's already winter and temps are dropping into the freezing range at night, wash your car early in the day so it has time to completely dry before nightfall.
Step 2: Inspect your car for any cracks or chips in the paint, including rust spots, and repair them as soon as possible. It's tough for salt to damage a car with a protective primer and paint coating.
Step 3: A winter wax will give your car an added buffer of protection. Plus, a fresh wax will make it much easier to wash off salt and grime throughout the season.
Winter Wheel Care
Road salt loves to eat away at chrome, eventually causing it to corrode and flake. If you have chrome wheels, consider swapping them for a durable alloy or steel set during winter. Whether you have chrome, alloy or steel, it's best to steer clear of winter puddles, since they generally contain cold standing water full of — you guessed it — road salt.
Garage Melt
If you have a warm garage to park in after a cold drive home, it's good to be you. But if there's any snow left on your car, you're actually at a higher risk for rust than your neighbor who trudges in from the street.
Why? Because rust forms when moisture and oxygen team up on bare metal (think melting snow on wheel wells, undercarriage and chrome wheels). Salt only speeds up the corrosive process, so it's important to wash your car often if you drive on salt-treated roads.
When to Wash
A quick spin through the car wash every 7-10 days will get those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies clean. Just be sure your car wash uses fresh water, not recycled. Otherwise, you risk getting rinsed with someone else's salty water.
If your car is black, white or red, it's a good idea to get another wax mid-winter since these colors are more sensitive to acid rain and UV rays.
Once spring arrives, give your car a detailed wash and wax to remove dirt, grime and any remaining road salt still hanging on from winter.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado Unveiled in Detroit
Chevrolet is coming off their best sales year ever after selling more than five million cars and trucks.
Monday at the North American International Car Show Chevy announced they are the fastest growing automotive brand in the world.
In 2014 Chevy will launch 20 new models, including the all-new Silverado that was introduced to the public for the first time.
Marie Rohrer Chevrolet Trucks Marketing Director says, “It’s what we call a major, all new from hook to hitch.”
The 2014 Silverado Light Duty and HD models will be made in Flint and will be launched in the second quarter of 2013.
The redesigned truck features an all-new powertrain that will work in conjunction with a trio of engines to ensure top performance.
“If you have an eight cylinder or six cylinder it will seamlessly transition to a four cylinder under lighter load conditions”, says Rohrer.
Chevy has also retooled the interior with extended and crew cab options. It will include new seats, instrument panels, and a way for consumers to connect their smart phones to the “infotainment” system. Drivers will be able to upload information from their phones and make the vehicle wifi capable.
Chevy officials say they are committed to helping rebuild America while keep production alive in Genesee County.
Rohrer says, “We are committed to Flint. Flint is one of the places we will continue to build these great trucks and you can count on that from Chevrolet”

Chevrolet Announces the Return of the Stingray!
Chevrolet is redefining modern performance with today’s debut of the all-new Corvette Stingray. And only a Corvette with the perfect balance of technology, design and performance can wear the iconic Stingray designation.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds and achieve more than 1g in cornering grip. It is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Corvette, exceeding the EPA-estimated 26 mpg of the current model.
“Like the ’63 Sting Ray, the best Corvettes embodied performance leadership, delivering cutting-edge technologies, breathtaking design and awe-inspiring driving experiences,” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “The all-new Corvette goes farther than ever, thanks to today’s advancements in design, technology and engineering.”
The all-new Corvette Stingray shares only two parts with the previous generation Corvette. It incorporates an all-new frame structure and chassis, a new powertrain and supporting technologies, as well as completely new exterior and interior designs. Highlights include:
- An interior that includes real carbon fiber, aluminum and hand-wrapped leather materials, two new seat choices – each featuring a lightweight magnesium frame for exceptional support – and dual eight-inch configurable driver/infotainment screens
- Advanced driver technologies, including a five-position Drive Mode Selector that tailors 12 vehicle attributes to the fit the driver’s environment and a new seven-speed manual transmission with Active Rev Matching that anticipates gear selections and matches engine speed for perfect shifts every time
- An all-new 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine combines advanced technologies, including direct injection, Active Fuel Management, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system that delivers more power while using less fuel
- Lightweight materials, including a carbon fiber hood and removable roof panel; composite fenders, doors and rear quarter panels; carbon-nano composite underbody panels and a new aluminum frame help shift weight rearward for an optimal 50/50 weight balance that supports a world-class power-to-weight ratio
- A sculptured exterior features advanced high-intensity discharge and light-emitting diode lighting and racing-proven aerodynamics that balance low drag for efficiency and performance elements for improved stability and track capability
- Track-capable Z51 Performance Package including: an electronic limited-slip differential, dry-sump oiling system, integral brake, differential and transmission cooling, as well as a unique aero package that further improves high-speed stability.
The new Corvette Stingray will be built at GM’s Bowling Green, Ky., assembly plant, which underwent a $131-million upgrade, including approximately $52 million for a new body shop to manufacture the aluminum frame in-house for the first time.
“We believe the Corvette represents the future of modern performance cars because it delivers more power, more driving excitement and better fuel efficiency,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “The result is better performance by every measure. The 2014 Corvette delivers the fastest acceleration, the most cornering grip, the most track capability, the best braking performance and what we expect to be the best fuel economy ever for a standard Corvette.”
The 2014 Corvette Stingray coupe goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013.
Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality.

GM adopts new Chevy ad campaign to suit global audience
General Motors Co is dropping its "Chevy Runs Deep" marketing campaign in favor of a tagline that GM officials said would better resonate with consumers around the world.
The new tag, "Find New Roads," is the automaker's first attempt at a global message for Chevrolet, one of two brands that GM is positioning as a global brand. The move comes as GM prepares to launch 20 Chevrolet vehicles worldwide. The slogan also reflects a change in the brand's customers, who are increasingly located outside the United States. Ten years ago, the U.S. market accounted for about 70 percent of Chevrolet sales. Now, it makes up 36 percent, said Alan Batey, head U.S. sales and global marketing, in an interview."It's very simple," Batey said of the new slogan, adding that its connotation may differ within various countries or among buyers of various models. "It means different things to different people in different segments of the market."The first ads will appear in the United States this quarter and will later roll out around the world. This is the first campaign from Commonwealth, a joint venture of two of GM's largest ad agencies, Batey said.GM and Commonwealth worked on the campaign for about six months, Batey said, adding that the new tagline will also serve as an internal rallying cry, or "North Star," for GM employees to focus more on product development.Chevrolet's ads traditionally have had a patriotic tenor. In the 1970s, GM rolled out its "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet" campaign, followed by "Heartbeat of America" in the 1980s."Chevy Runs Deep" was the brainchild of Joel Ewanick, who was fired last year as GM's head of U.S. marketing. The campaign was intended to celebrate Chevrolet's history at the time of its 100-year anniversary. But critics said the campaign failed to connect well with customers. GM officials said the new tagline would do better in the more than 140 markets that sell Chevrolet cars and trucks."We have sold Chevrolets around the world for almost a century, but this is the first time we have aligned behind one global vision," Mary Barra, head of GM product development, said in a statement on Tuesday.(courtesy of Reuters)

Your Monday Safety Tip: Car Seat Safety for Your Child
- Birth - 12 Months - Your child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. There are different types of rear-facing car seats: Infant-only seats can only be used rear-facing. Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats typically have higher height and weight limits for the rear-facing position, allowing you to keep your child rear-facing for a longer period of time.
- 1 - 3 Years - Keep your child rear-facing as long as possible. It’s the best way to keep him or her safe. Your child should remain in a rear-facing car seat until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the rear-facing car seat, your child is ready to travel in a forward-facing car seat with a harness.
- 4 - 7 Years - Keep your child in a forward-facing car seat with a harness until he or she reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by your car seat’s manufacturer. Once your child outgrows the forward-facing car seat with a harness, it’s time to travel in a booster seat, but still in the back seat.
- 8 - 12 Years - Keep your child in a booster seat until he or she is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly. For a seat belt to fit properly the lap belt must lie snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should lie snug across the shoulder and chest and not cross the neck or face. Remember: your child should still ride in the back seat because it’s safer there.
