Top Ten Road Trip Games

It never, ever fails: Within 30 minutes of stuffing the car to its gills with luggage and people for a getaway, you're left wondering how you can get away from everyone's complaints of boredom. And to think, only hours more to go! Despite popular in-car entertainment such as DVD players, truth be told, not everyone's car is equipped to offer the convenience of penguins or Dora as a babysitter for the next 50, 100 or 200 miles.

That's why we've compiled a list of road trip games that don't require any tools, paper or accessories beyond the open road. We have suggestions for passengers at every age level, although each game can be tweaked accordingly.

I Spy

Probably the classic make-time-go-by game of all time. One person looks around and chooses an object that the others have to guess, with their only clue being these words: "I spy with my little eye something that begins with (insert the first letter of the object's name)." Or the clue can be the object's color. The player who guesses the object gets to go next. The tricky part? It's not fair to "spy" something that's whizzing by the car at highway speeds. A landmark (mountain range, forest) that will be in the players' view for a few minutes is best.

20 Questions

"Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Only 18 more times to go! In 20 Questions, whomever goes first thinks of, well, anything. The first question is always, "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" After that, the players can ask pointed questions to try and guess — go around the car in a circle asking for clues such as, "Does it bark?" or "Can you peel it?" for example, although the answer to those questions can only be "yes" or "no." If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the "thing" is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.

License Plates

There are many ways to play with license plates, depending on the age of your kids. Young participants can call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles — or better yet, triples! — of letters and/or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins. Older kids can "collect" out-of-state plates they see. (Make it tougher by going in alphabetical order.) Or they can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. A plate with the letters E, F and T, for example, might become the word "effort" (using those letters to start the word, in the middle and at the end). Those could make "Ed's Favorite Tacos" if you're running with phrases.

Slug-a-Bug

The concept is that players keep track of how many Volkswagen Beetles they spot on the road. We've heard of variations in which the game is limited to New or vintage Beetles, or versions where the older Bugs are worth more. In the game's original version you were supposed to punch your seat mate when you spotted a Bug, but most parents find that any game that involves hitting can get out of hand pretty quickly. So keep score some other way — tapping your seat mate, counting on your fingers (first to 10 wins) or something more in keeping with the Bug's peaceful hippie history.

Where's the Alphabet?

Perform this as teams or solo players. You'll want to utilize road signs, billboards, shop names — any reading material outside the window qualifies as long as it's spotted on your side of the car. (If you're the front-seat passenger, focus on the right.) You'll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples — there's your A. The exit for the Brooklyn Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see "Road Closed," however, you'll probably be happy to have the nine other games listed here.

Name That Tune

As with the classic TV game show, the winner here is the one who figures out the name of the "mystery song" first. For those with singing/whistling/humming talent, this can be as much karaoke as a guessing game. Choose a theme for the game, such as show tunes, movie or TV themes, or Justin Timberlake. (Good luck, adults.) The winner gets to be the singer for the next round. If no one can carry a tune in a bucket, then try guessing the songs on the radio. Really want to mix it up? Hit the "seek" button so no one gets an unfair advantage from sticking to one particular station's format.

The Picnic Game

A memory builder for all ages. One player says, "I went to a picnic Saturday and I brought..." then says a picnic favorite that begins with the letter A, like apples. The next player repeats the opening phrase, and after "...I brought" they repeat the A item then add one that begins with B: "I brought an apple and some bananas." The third player repeats the opener, the A and the B portions, and then adds something that begins with C. Get it? Can your travelers get through the alphabet, remembering all the items everyone contributed? Try keeping track of 23 items plus figuring out what you can take to a picnic that starts with X!

Count the...

Probably even the most enthusiastic young'ns will catch on to this being busywork, but for awhile it'll be all they'll think about! And there is a bonus: Interest is likely to reignite on its own shortly after it stalls. Count the... can be anything: cows, telephone poles, headlights, train cars, blue pickup trucks — you name it. Shouting out the thing to keep track of is all that is required.

Tunnels

This one is simple: When you come to a tunnel, see who can hold their breath the longest. True, it may not be one best played by the driver (lightheadedness, anyone?), but everyone else can give it a go. We used to be amazed at our own skill at this as kids.

Geography Lesson

Geography is much more fun outside the classroom, isn't it? For this game, choose countries, cities or states (or go nuts and try rivers and lakes or capitals). Let's say your theme is states. The first player names a location, and the next player has to rattle off another state that starts with the last letter of the previous player's state. Therefore, if it were Michigan, the next state would have to start with N, like Nebraska. The A could be Alaska, and so on. Note: This one makes our brain hurt.

2013 Chevy Suburban Named One of the "Best Family Cars of 2013"

#10 2013 Chevrolet Suburban 1500

For the family whose cargo- and people-hauling requirements run to the extreme, it doesn't get much better than the Chevy Suburban. With seating for up to nine passengers, the ability to tow nearly five tons and enough cargo space to host a family picnic, the Suburban continues to grow its legacy as the quintessential full-size SUV.

The Chevrolet Suburban traces its roots to 1935, and 78 years later, this full-size SUV proudly claims its status as the oldest continuous nameplate in automotive history. While drivers' preferences have changed and gas prices have steadily climbed over the years, there are still families and fleets that yearn for or even require a massive, fuel-thirsty sport utility vehicle that can easily haul people and cargo. In those respects, the Chevy Suburban for 2013 and its twin, the GMC Yukon XL, are among the rare SUVs that can be configured to carry up to nine passengers and tow well over 9,000 pounds. Available in half-ton (1500) and heavy-duty (2500) three-quarter-ton models, the Suburban comes in trims that range from the basic to amenity-laden.

Chevy Sees Greener Pastures with 2014 Silverado High Country

It's no secret that full-size pickups are the financial engines that power Detroit automakers – it's been that way for decades. In recent years, though, growing consumer appetites for dolled-up trucks has meant even more opportunities for manufacturers to line their coffers while pleasing increasingly discerning customers. Trims like King Ranch on the Ford F-Series and Laramie Longhorn on Ram trucks now include high-end amenities that were the exclusive preserve of luxury cars just a few years ago.

General Motors has been content to let its GMC brand harvest top-shelf pickup buyers for some time now – particularly with its high-line Denali models – but it's hard to turn away easy profits. GM says over 30 percent of new pickup sales now transact above $40,000, and that figure is growing by the year. Thus, it's no surprise that execs are finally letting Chevrolet get in on the action with this new range-topping High Country trim for the 2014 Silverado. Officials tell Autoblog that it's the first premium-branded Chevy pickup since the Cameo Carrier of the 1950s.

Sitting above the LTZ and Z71 off-road model, the Silverado High Country sets itself apart with trim-specific chrome grille and body-color bumpers front and rear – the only fullsize Chevy so equipped – along with unique 20-inch alloy wheels and a few bits of chrome frosting to go with the usual complement of badges. Available only in crew cab configuration, High Country will be offered in both two- and four-wheel drive with the buyer's choice of V8 engines – 5.3-liter or 6.2-liter – along with either a 5-foot, 8-inch or 6-foot, 6-inch box. There are no specific powertrain or suspension calibrations for the model.

Inside, the changes continue the somewhat restrained Western theme, with saddle brown leather (a grade nicer than what's found in lesser Silverados) lining heated and cooled bucket seats that have the High Country logo embroidered on the headrests. We've already had the chance to sit in the truck, and it's a comfortable, high-quality environment that's perhaps a notch or two down on the cowboy overtones compared to something like an F-150 King Ranch. GM knows they need this model to perform well in Texas, the nation's largest truck market, but they're also hoping the model plays well on the coasts.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but options will be few. A High Country Premium Package with driver alert technologies (read: lane departure and collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert and haptic seat), power pedals, trailer brake control and heated steering wheel figures to be the big-buck bundle, while other options will include navigation, sunroof, rear-seat entertainment, and GM's new CornerStep bumper finished in chrome.

Interestingly, Chevy's research suggests that pickup buyers at this elevated price point are less brand-loyal than those under $40k, so the company is eying more conquest sales than it might with lesser models. Yet officials say they don't think High Country will cannibalize GMC Sierra Denali buyers, because despite their close mechanical and visual kinship, the two brands support different owner demographics (GM labels target High Country buyers as "Everyday Hero" and Denali customers as "Disciplined Achievers"). As it is, the High Country will be priced above the starting price of well-equipped Sierras but fall short of Denali models. The latter will also keep some exclusive features to ensure it remains GM's most prestigious pickup, including a reconfigurable eight-inch screen in the instrument cluster. Chevy Truck director of marketing Maria Rohrer says the two GM divisions are working "closer than ever," presumably to make sure the divisions don't step on each others' toes as they approach each other at the high-dollar summit of the truck market.

How to Save on Gas and Get Better Gas Mileage

How to save on gas: I have always been told that idling your car saves gas, because it takes much more gas to start your car.

Turns out I was wrong.

I learned that if you idle for only 10 seconds, your engine uses as much gas as it does when you start your engine. Yikes! If you round up to two minutes? It uses the same amount of fuel that it takes to drive 1 mile.

Not only will this tip save you tons of gas and money, but it will also help preserve the environment and cut down on pollution. I don't know about you but I'm sold!

Here are more gas-saving tips:

Check your tire pressure. You can get as much as 3.3% better gas mileage when your tires are filled properly!

Change your oil on time. Your car uses more gas when it's in need of an oil change.

Buy your gas on Wednesdays. Gas prices typically go up on weekends, so fill up mid-week.

Carpool! Drive with someone whenever possible, or trade off driving your kids to school with a friend.

Condense your trips. Try to get all your shopping done in one day rather than doing little trips every day.

Walk. If there is a park a few blocks away, walk rather than drive. It's shocking how much you can save by cutting out a drive here and there. Plus, this is better for the environment AND your health.

Take note of gas prices. It's easy to pull into the nearest station and fill up without really noting the pricing. Take note every day of what the gas prices are, and FILL UP when you see a good deal.

Warehouse stores. Buy gas from Costco or Sams Club...they often times have great discounts.

Take advantage of fuel perks. Some grocery stores offer discounts on gas when you buy groceries. If you buy groceries there anyway, top off your tank! Better than paying full-price somewhere else.

Pay with cash. At some stations they offer you a discount if you don't buy your gas with a credit card.

Change your tires. Make sure you have the right size tires for your car, and that they are in good condition. This makes a big difference.

Change your air filter. A dirty filter causes worse gas mileage.

Don't speed! This helps your gas mileage, AND your wallet by avoiding speeding tickets

Use cruise control. Driving with cruise control when on the freeway gets you WAY better gas mileage.

Take off easy. Gunning your car and taking off with speed burns through unnecessary fuel. Try to take off slowly when at a red light or stop sign.

So there you go! Simple tips to help you save on gas. How do YOU save on gas?
