The Top 10 Moments in Chevrolet Motorsports

Chevy_topmoments

How do you sum up a century of racing greatness?

It wasn’t easy. After all, 100 years is a long time. Especially with an international motorsports heritage as storied as ours. So, after much thought. And much discussion. And maybe a spirited fistfight or two, we finally whittled down an encyclopedia’s worth of success to the top 10 defining moments in Chevrolet racing history. The hard, fast proof that Chevy Runs Deep.

#10 | Zora’s wild ride
1956: To publicize the ’56 Chevy’s new V8, Zora-Arkus Duntov, father of the Corvette, agreed to race an as-yet-unrevealed preproduction model in the annual Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Assaulting the treacherous course in full camouflage without a roll bar, he not only won his class, he set a new record and catapulted Chevy into the postwar performance spotlight.

#9  | The Chaparral Can Ams
1964-70: In 1964, Jim Hall, with covert assistance from Chevrolet Research and Development, shocked race-sanctioning bodies and forever changed the motorsports world. His incredibly innovative designs, incorporating high mounted wings, movable aero packages, underbody suction fans and more, dominated the Can Am circuit, snatching victory at the USRRC Championships in ’64, the 12 Hours of Sebring in ’65, and the Nurburgring 1,000-kilometer in ’66. Following a stunning 1-2 finish at Laguna Seca, race officials finally caught up to the Chaparrals, spelling the beginning of the end for the program. Gone, but not forgotten, the Chaparral spirit lives on in every Cruze Eco we build.

#8 | Victory is electric
1997-99: Echoing Zora Arkus-Duntov’s dramatic test run in ’56, Larry Ragland made history driving a special Chevy S-10 to victory at the 1997 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. This time, without using a single drop of gas. Not content with taking the Electric Vehicle Class, sounding the death knell for oil and changing the world, Larry went on to prove the viability of electric power − and lay the groundwork for the Chevy Volt − with wins in the 1998-99 Super Stock Truck Class and overall victory in the 2000 High Tech Truck Class.

#7 | Cruze crushes WTCC
2010: In a shocking departure from Chevy’s signature large displacement V8s, the Cruze made its presence known at the World Touring Car Championship in 2010. After a season dominating BMWs around the globe, Chevrolet scored a devastating one-two punch − seizing both the Driver’s Championship and the Manufacturer’s Championship. Proving that, yes, there just might be a replacement for displacement.

#6 | Dale Earnhardt Sr. wins the Daytona 500
1998: After 19 years of chasing the checkered flag at the beach, Dale Sr. finally conquered the Daytona 500, recording his first and only victory in the “Great American Race.” The scene that followed is widely considered to be one of the most touching moments in sports history, as crews and competitors alike lined Pit Road to shake his hand on the long, slow drive to Victory Lane.

#5 | Corvette versus the World
2008: Corvette slayed the monsters − BMW, Ferrari and Porsche − to seize its eighth consecutive Manufacturer’s Championship, making it the most successful team in American Le Mans Series history and conveniently placing Chevrolet in the crosshairs of global competition.

#4 | Jimmie Johnson takes Five
2010: After making a habit of winning in everything from stadium S-10s to off-road Silverados, Jimmie Johnson rode Chevy V8 power to an unprecedented five consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver’s Championships − the first driver ever to do so. Leaving some to wonder, was it the man? Or the machine?

#3 | Impala meets Daytona
1959: On February 20, the now-legendary Impala locked in its first-ever win in its first-ever race. Guided by Bob Welborn’s steady hand and lead foot, the checkered flag started a trend of Daytona dominance for Chevrolet that continues to this day.

#2 | Mr. Corvette goes to France
1960: Because of an unofficial ban on factory racing at the time, legendary sportsman Briggs Cunningham introduced Corvette to the continent. In its international debut, Corvette ruled the “Big Bore” GT category, scoring the first-ever Chevrolet victory at Le Mans − a winning tradition proudly continued today, most recently with a spectacular GTE Pro class trophy at the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race.

#1 | The race that started it all
1907: Legend has it that William “Billy” Durant, founder of General Motors, invited Louis Chevrolet and his younger brother Arthur to race for the honor of being his personal chauffeur. Louis, already an international racing sensation, easily blew away Arthur. Stunned by Louis’ seemingly complete disregard for personal safety, Billy handed the prized job to Arthur on the spot. Even so, Louis won in the long run. A few short years later, with Billy’s enthusiastic backing, the first Chevrolet was born. The rest, as they say, is history.

INTRODUCING A CONVERTIBLE WITH THE POWER AND PERFORMANCE OF CAMARO ZL1 COUPE.

2011-10-18_1453

“When it goes on sale in 2012, the 2013 Camaro ZL-1 convertible will be one of the most powerful, and most capable, convertibles available at any price” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “This is a car that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you drop the top – or hit the gas.”

The Camaro ZL1 convertible is rated at 580 horsepower. Among 2+2 convertibles, that is surpassed by only the $280,000 Bentley Continental Supersports.

Like the coupe, the ZL1 convertible features a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” V8, rated at 580 horsepower and 556 lb.-ft. of torque. This power is complemented by advanced powertrain and chassis technologies designed to deliver exceptional performance on the road or track. ZL1 Convertible will be offered with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

From Day One, the architecture for the fifth-generation Camaro was designed to accommodate a convertible model, which gives the ZL1 convertible coupe-like driving dynamics. Four strategic reinforcements enhance the already-stiff body structure. They include:

• A tower-to-tower brace under the hood

• A transmission support reinforcement brace

• Underbody tunnel brace

• Front “X” brace and stiffer cradle as well as rear underbody “V” braces.

The suspension of the ZL1 convertible uses the third generation of Magnetic Ride with damping levels that adjust up to 1,000 times per second, and a GM-exclusive Performance Traction Management system for optimum launch and cornering.

The Camaro ZL1 convertible is not only the most powerful Chevrolet convertible ever – it will be the first drop-top to earn the legendary ZL1 designation. Watch for it in late 2012.

Common Misconceptions about Dealership Service Departments

Common Misconceptions about Dealership Service Departments

Misconception #1:  Dealerships are too expensive... shop around.
This is not true. We survey many of our competitors to assure you a fair price for each and every service you receive from Holz Motors. From our hourly labor rate to the cost of our oil changes we cost compare many of our offered services to assure the best possible value for your repair!

Misconception #2:  Dealerships are not convenient.
Oh but we are! Holz Motors offers evening and Saturday hours that are unmatched by many of our competitors. We realize that it is very difficult to have your vehicle repaired from “9 to 5”. That is why we have technicians here to service your vehicle until 8:00 pm 4 nights a week and until 3:00 pm on Saturdays!

Misconception #3:  Dealerships cannot be trusted.

Defensive Driving Rule #9: Don't Run Red!

Dont-run-red
In my home town, drivers reportedly run red lights 120,000+ times each day!

First, there are two basic types of red light runners—there's the daydreamer or distracted driver who just doesn't see it, and then there's the driver who's impatient and accelerates on the yellow signal instead of stopping and waiting the average 45 seconds of a signal cycle! Some of us are guilty of both offenses. Are we really in that much of a hurry? Running red lights kills hundreds of us every year.

What constitutes running a red light? It means your vehicle entered the intersection after the signal turned red. In order to know whether you've entered an intersection, you must know where the intersection begins. The boundary is farther out than you might think, and that causes part of the problem. Here's the definition in my state: the intersection boundary (in Arizona) is the extension of the lateral curb lines (of two or more cross streets).

The-box

The lateral curb line is an unpainted line drawn from corner to corner—just imagine a line drawn from the "point" of each corner (where the outer edge of the sidewalk meets the outer edge of the cross street sidewalk) across the street to the next one. (The dotted line in the image at the right shows the "lateral curb line.") The painted stop line and crosswalk are typically several feet nearer to you than the boundary, and many drivers erroneously believe the last crosswalk line marks the edge of the intersection. This error can result in an extra bit of time for the light to turn red before you actually enter the intersection, resulting in a violation. PLEASE NOTE: The definition of intersection varies from state to state and the differences can be significant—you need to know what the law and definition is in YOUR state.

In my state, if you entered the intersection legally (on a green or yellow signal), you have the right to clear the intersection even after it turns red. You will find that most states have similar provisions so that left turning traffic doesn't get bogged. In all of this, though, the legalities are not the most important issue.

In the defensive driving world, we say, "the green light anticipator met the red light procrastinator." The collision of these two is usually a "T-bone" - where the two vehicles meet at a 90 degree angle. It's not a "nice" collision. The typical speed through an intersection is over 50 mph! You'd find this is one of the most commonly fatal collisions - one in which seat belts and normal rear-firing air bags won't help you much.

Be careful around intersections. If you get a yellow light, stop. You can anticipate when the light is about to change, so it is no excuse to say it was too late. If you have the green light, watch for the red-light runner—look left, right, then left AGAIN to make sure the intersection is going to be safe before you enter it, even on one-way streets (because somebody might be going the wrong way AND running red lights). Red light runners are often speeding as well, so make sure you look down the road far enough to see them coming.

Running red lights is too dangerous, both for you and for others, no matter how pressured or late you are. Slow down, grow some patience! Pay attention to your driving so you aren't one of the oblivious red-light runners.

And live to drive another day!

Chevy and MLB team up during the 2011 Postseason to celebrate youth baseball and help make Major League dreams a reality.

2011-10-11_1249

Chevrolet is firing up the 2011 postseason by teaming up with Major League Baseball, giving fans the chance to win from hundreds of MLB prizes.

Chevrolet’s commitment to baseball is no new concept. In fact, we’ve been doing it for a while now. In 2010, we partnered up with MLB, Rawlings®, Scotts®, and Ripken Baseball to launch the Diamonds & Dreams program. In its first year, we helped make over baseball fields for five communities. By the next year, we were outfitting over 100 communities with 20 field makeovers, 60 equipment packages, and 20 baseball clinics.

“All kids want to step on a major league baseball field,” remarked one lucky recipient of Chevrolet’s Diamonds & Dreams program. “Just that feeling of stepping on a high-quality field is amazing, and now they have a little piece of that here (in their community) for themselves.”

Building off this relationship, Chevy and MLB decided to roll out the next step for the 2011 postseason by calling on our young MVPs in the making. We’re asking you to submit photos of your favorite youth players for the chance to win hundreds of MLB prizes and even the chance to possibly catch your player’s card broadcast during one of the postseason games airing on FOX or TBS.

“At Chevrolet, we have always supported the game of baseball at all levels,” said Phil Caruso, Sales & Promotions Manager for Chevrolet. “Through our ongoing partnership with MLB, we strive to impact future ball players that will someday be playing in the postseason games we are watching today. We feel this program is a great way to give back to the sport and also a great way for families to show off their own future MVP.”

Join in for a chance to get swept up in the excitement and possibly see your favorite teams clinch their final moments of glory this postseason. Bring your friends in along for the ride and get in on the action for the chance to win at chevybaseball.com.

So, if your spring-cleaning doesn't end with spring, you should get the truck that'll roll up it's sheet metal sleeves and work as hard as you do.

Chevrolet and Glee crown the winner of the “Sing the USA” competition

This past spring, Chevy and Glee asked America to “Sing the USA” for the chance to be famous. Thousands answered—both online and in person—but, in the end, only one performance could rise above the rest. A very talented 23-year-old Gleek from Columbia, South Carolina.

So without further ado, America, meet Bruce McLamore.

Intrigued by his incredible talent and amazingly fun performance, we just had to sit down with Bruce and ask him a few questions. This is his story.

Hey Bruce, Bruce and Bruce.

Bruce: Uh, hi…

Bruce: What’s up, how you doin’?

Bruce: Let’s do this!

So how’s working with Bruce?

Bruce: I think working with me, well, according to my brother, it can be fun. And then it can also be kind of tiring. Because when I get focused on wanting to get a project done, I stay up for hours working on it. Even if I have class the next day. And my parents will testify to that as well, because I love doing what I do. I love making music. And editing. And making people laugh. But I think it’s nice working with me.

All joking aside, is this a one-man show, or do you have a team?

Bruce: From the beginning of the YouTube channel, it was me and my brother, but my brother is focusing on school right now. He’s in high school. So I edit all the videos. I don’t really dance, but I try to choreograph some of the movements that we do. And sometimes my brother might come up with something for the skits that we do. But the vocal arrangements, it’s me. For the most part, I guess you could say it’s a one-man show.

Your video wasn’t just really cool, it was pretty technically amazing. How did you put it together?

BRUCE: I record in my room. And then we have a separate room, which is my parents’ guest room upstairs, and we turn it into a mini studio. We have a green screen and a microphone in there.

How did you hear about the Chevy “Sing the USA” competition?

Bruce: Well, I was searching for different contests to enter, singing competitions. Then I saw Glee—and that I still had time to enter it—so I definitely had to do it!

Why did you enter?

Bruce: I love the show Glee, for one thing. I love singing. I love the comedy they have in the show. I also love some of the messaging that they have in it. And I felt like it would be an honor to possibly work with some people. Be around those people. Maybe have the opportunity to sing along with them. And have my voice heard by different people. It’s Glee, you know?

How did you come up with the idea for your video?

Bruce: I’ve done some videos with three versions of myself before. Or three people or whatnot. I think it’s because I want to show people that it really is me singing. And it’s a great way to show the different expressions used for different parts or different harmonies or different ad-libs. I think it adds some extra flavor to video. It’s fun.

How did you feel when you found out you won?

Bruce: I was overwhelmed. I was actually recording a video, I forget which one, when I got the call that I won. You could hear my expression and everything. I was excited. And then I told my brother, and he was, like, “No way!” And I was saying, “Hold on, hold on!” And you hear my Mom, “Ahhh!” You know, I was just excited.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Bruce: I ask myself that a lot. I really want to work somewhere in television with music. I love music. I don’t know how to get started in it. That’s why I’m doing as much as I can online. And if that doesn’t work out, I will have school as my backup. I’ll have a degree. Ultimately, I want to make my hobby my job. Like, an actual job. A profession.

Obviously, the big time isn’t far away. When you really blow up, what will be your Chevrolet of choice?

Bruce: A black Chevy Impala looks so nice! I think that would be my personal choice in a car.

Finally, how does it feel to be famous?

Bruce: Famous? I don’t know what feeling famous is like, but I will definitely be excited.

Without a doubt, the end of the “Sing the USA” competition is just the beginning for Bruce. Be sure to check out his YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/DCfan4life for more great performances, skits and videos. With talent like his, it’s worth the visit.
